Another early morning in Peru! Seeing the sunrise at Machu Picchu was truly amazing and well worth the early wake-up call. We were just a few days early for the Summer Solstice (June 24th), but the sun rose over the crevice in the mountains almost in the exact right spot.

And finally, our first glimpse of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains! It was truly an amazing sight, seeing Machu Picchu for the first time. We had an early morning bus to a train to another bus and then some hiking, but it was totally worth it:

One of the coolest hikes we did in Peru was through these salt mines that are still in use today. The source is a very salty salt water spring (which we taste tested) which flows into each pool. Between the wind and sunshine, the water evaporates leaving behind thick sheets of salt!

Getting to the city of Cusco from Lima, the quick hour and a half flight provides some pretty amazing views of the Andes mountain range. And I can’t be sitting in a window seat and not take a few pictures…

Adventures in Peru: Saxahuaman

It will be very hard not to take the rest of 2011 to post pictures from my trip to Machu Picchu! But here is one of a site I loved, called Saxahuaman located on a hilltop in the city of Cusco. At over 12,000 feet high, we really felt the elevation up here. The stones making up this site are cut exactly to tightly fit with the stones around them using no mortar – one of the biggest stones was over 120 tons!
